HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR TATTOO ?

Getting a tattoo is much more than simply adding a design to your skin: it’s a commitment to looking after it to prevent infections and maintain vibrant colours. After your session, your tattoo will need proper care to heal correctly and stay in good condition over time. In this article, we’ll outline the simple yet essential steps to protect your new tattoo and ensure it heals well.

First of all, tattoo healing is unique to each person. Not all skin heals in the same way, as it depends on the location of the tattoo, the ink, the technique used, and, most importantly, the aftercare provided following the session.

Here are the three most important rules to begin with:

  1. Listen to your tattoo artist: They are best placed to advise you, so if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact them.
  2. Wash your hands: To avoid infections, it is crucial that your hands are clean and dry before applying any care or touching your tattoo.
  3. Protect your tattoo: Use a suitable cream and avoid exposing it to the sun as much as possible.

Aftercare Tips

Once your session is complete, your tattoo artist will apply a bandage to your tattoo, which have to be removed after a specific amount of time. There are various types of bandages: a plastic wrap, usually kept on for 1 to 3 hours, or a Dermalize (second skin) bandage, which is usually left on for around three days. Once again, follow your tattoo artist’s advice.

The next step is cleaning your tattoo: it should be washed multiple times a day, generally 2 to 3 times. Use lukewarm water and gently apply pH-neutral soap with your hands in circular motions. Continue this routine throughout the healing process.

To dry your tattoo, gently pat it (don’t rub or scratch) with a clean, dry paper towel or cloth.

Depending on your tattoo and your artist’s recommendations, healing may involve either dry healing or hydration. If hydration is required, after cleaning, you’ll need to apply a thin layer of healing cream. Alternatively, your tattoo artist may recommend shea butter, Dexeryl, or even Cicaplast.

Do’s and Don’ts

  1. Avoid sun exposure during healing: Once healed, always apply sunscreen with an SPF of 50 or higher when exposing the tattoo to sunlight.
  2. Avoid swimming or stagnant water: Stay away from pools, saunas, steam rooms, and the like.
  3. Avoid exercise or activities that cause sweating: Sweat can interfere with the tattoo and potentially damage it.
  4. Let your tattoo breathe as much as possible: The more air your tattoo gets, the faster it will heal. For a period after your session, avoid tight clothing over the tattoo. Opt for loose, breathable fabrics, preferably cotton.

After 4 to 6 days, your skin will begin to peel — and this is NORMAL. Similar to sunburn, dead skin flakes off to reveal new skin. Don’t worry! Even if it seems as though the colour of your tattoo is peeling off with the scabs, it isn’t. The tattoo needle penetrates deep enough into the dermis (the second layer of skin), ensuring the design is permanent.

Important: Do not pick at peeling skin or scabs, as this could damage the tattoo and cause scarring.

Final Reminder: one month after your session, if you notice any issues with your tattoo, don’t hesitate to contact your tattoo artist to arrange a touch-up appointment.
