HOW TO PREPARE FOR A TATTOO SESSION?

You’ve booked your tattoo session? Brilliant!

Now, all you have to do is properly prepare your body for a session that can vary in length. A tattoo session can be a challenging experience for the body, depending on the individual. In this article, we’ll explain how to prepare effectively for your session, based on advice from tattoo artists in Reims.

If you’re not careful, both the session and the healing process can go poorly: fainting, poor blood clotting, and poor ink adhesion to the skin are often the result of inadequate preparation for a tattoo appointment.

“Since getting a tattoo requires a lot of energy from your body, if you’re lacking resources, you might shake, feel faint, or experience complications. In any case, if you’re not in good shape for the session, the pain will feel more intense.”

Advice from Tattoo Artists

Don’t hesitate to ask your tattoo artist questions. There’s no such thing as a silly question!

To make it easier for you shy folks, we’ve asked some tattoo artists for their advice and here’s what you need to know to prepare for your session..

Before the Session

One important piece of information to share with your tattoo artist: any medical treatments you are taking, especially those that affect blood clotting. These treatments can impact the tattooing process itself (e.g., bleeding) and the appearance of the tattoo after it has healed. It’s also a good idea to consult your doctor.

Regarding medical products: avoid using numbing creams. These creams can negatively affect the appearance of your tattoo. While the idea of avoiding pain may seem appealing, the effects of numbing creams typically last only 30 minutes, and the pain may feel worse once the sensation returns.

As with any art form, having a good foundation is essential for a good result. In this case, the foundation is your skin. While drastic changes to your skincare routine are not recommended (to avoid triggering natural skin reactions), good hydration a week before your session can be beneficial.

Additionally, avoid waxing or shaving before your session. Most tattoo artists prefer to handle this themselves to prevent cuts or skin irritation. Tattoos cannot be done on damaged skin.

On the Day of the Session

As mentioned earlier, tattooing requires a lot of energy from your body. To avoid fainting or discomfort during the session, make sure to eat well and stay hydrated (don’t attend on an empty stomach). If needed, bring a sugary snack to keep your energy up during the session.

While hydration is essential, not all liquids are suitable. Avoid alcohol for at least 48 hours beforehand. Like medical treatments, alcohol affects blood clotting and can negatively impact the outcome of your tattoo. The same applies to drugs.

After all the effort to prepare your skin, why risk ruining it on the day of the session by neglecting proper hygiene? Aside from the comfort of having clean skin, your tattoo artist will also appreciate it.

For your comfort, wear loose clothing that provides easy access to the tattoo area. Opt for dark clothes or ones you don’t mind staining, as there might be ink or minor bleeding.

Arrive relaxed and calm for your session. If needed, bring a book, a comforting item, or anything that helps you feel at ease. Some tattoo artists allow you to bring a friend for support—don’t hesitate to ask. If you’d prefer to be tattooed in silence, you can also bring earplugs or headphones.

Now that you’re informed, your session is bound to go smoothly! So relax, follow our advice, and enjoy your tattoo experience!
