An artistic profession par excellence, tattooing is attracting more and more enthusiasts in France every year. But if you’re itching to get your hands on a needle, the road to becoming a professional tattoo artist is full of pitfalls and grey areas. What training do you need? What are the legal requirements? Here’s everything you need to know about the fascinating and demanding world of tattooing.
A rapidly expanding profession…
In the mid-1980s, there were just twenty or so tattoo artists in France, but by 2024 this number will have exploded, according to the Syndicat National des Artistes Tatoueurs (SNAT). The union estimates that there are between 15,000 and 20,000 tattoo professionals in France, and the number is unlikely to fall!
…But with no official recognition
Tattoo artists are not yet an officially recognised profession in France. There is no state diploma validating the profession, and the only training currently offered is the tattoo artist diploma from the École Française du Tatouage, which is optional but not compulsory.

The sector is still largely unregulated, but there are a few formalities to be completed: registering as a liberal profession, declaring your activity to the Regional Health Agency (ARS) and taking a 3-day health and hygiene course.
Most tattooists are self-employed, and often choose to open their own studio. For some, it’s the start of an entrepreneurial adventure, where they can welcome other artists, employees or freelancers.
Building your reputation
Attracting customers depends above all on the tattooist’s ability to showcase his or her expertise. A carefully selected portfolio of their best work is essential to reveal their unique style and skills. Social networks such as Instagram and Facebook also play a key role: real digital showcases that allow you to expand your audience and build customer loyalty by posting regularly and interacting with your followers.

What’s next?
The world of tattooing is constantly evolving, with constantly changing trends, techniques and tools. Ongoing training and keeping abreast of new developments are essential for any tattoo professional who wants to develop and grow their career in this fast-moving sector.
